Fort-de-France, capital and largest city of Martinique (agglomeration of approximately 165,000 inhabitants) concentrates most of the administrative, military and cultural functions of the territory. Martinique World Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in September 2021, mobilizes the territory in a process of sustainable development and preservation of its natural and cultural assets. This reserve, resulting from a local will, aims to strengthen the involvement of the population in the preservation and enhancement of its territory.

Martinique, located in the Caribbean Sea and known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and rich history is on the same time zone as New York (USA). This time zone is behind the Greenwich meridian by four hours (UTC-4) in universal time. During the winter period, the time in Paris is Central European Time (CET). There is a 5 hour time difference between Martinique and Paris. In summer, daylight saving time applies in mainland France - in 2023, from Sunday March 26 to Sunday October 29 - the Martinique - Paris time difference changes to 6 hours (UTC+2).

In Martinique, the climate is characterized by two fundamental seasons: a dry season, "Lent", from February to April and a wet season, “Wintering”, from July to October, favorable to frequent and intense rains. Lent and wintering are separated by two more or less marked off-seasons.
